Acer are generally hardy deciduous trees, and this family possesses many well-known ornamental trees for example the common syca¬ more plus the various maples, including the japanese kinds with finely cut and brilliantly coloured plant life.
In terms of augmenting these lovely trees the larger maples and syca¬ more will thrive in a ordinary garden soil and can not require special therapy. Regular pruning is not necessary, but some thinning and also regulation of growth may be required in the matter of young trees to pre¬ provide their symmetry. This is better done in February. The highly coloured not to mention cut-leaved Japanese maples are rather tender and really should therefore be given the sunny but sheltered spot. Moreover, they do best in a very deep, well-worked soil, for preference of an light loamy character, because they just don't thrive in wet chilled clays. These also need many regulation and thinning from the young growth the more so as they normally are planted as small examples in prominent positions. Pruning must be as light as possible and is best done in Feb. All kinds of Acer may be planted anytime from the end regarding October till early March, but care should be taken to establish the Japanese kinds as soon as the soil is in carefully good working con¬ dition.
All species can be increased with seeds, which should be sown within a sheltered border outdoors or from a cold frame immediately after they are ready. The "wings" should be broken in the seeds before sowing. Often germination is slow, whereby the seeds should be exposed to frost in their moment season to hasten decay in their hard coats. The varie¬ scarves, however, will not breed true like this and must be spread by budding or grafting through to seedlings of the type where they have originated.
Your Achillea are hardy herbaceous perennials in addition to rock plants, and they are often roughly divided into only two sections. First the larger species the most suitable for planting in the particular herbaceous border or within a reserved bed for slicing, and secondly the dwarf forms most at. home inside rock garden or about the dry wall.
Typical instances of the first type can be Achillea eupatorium, Achillea millefolium Cerise King, and Achillea ptaimica. Very good rock achilleas are Achillea. ageratifolia, Achillea tomentosa, along with Achillea. clavenns.
The herbaceous achilleas will grow in any ordinary garden soil which has been well dug and will not require special cultural consideration. Indeed, they are amongst the easiest and hardest with herbaceous per¬ ennials. The long white root of Achillea ptarmica must be spread out flatly the moment planting and covered along with about 2 in. involving soil. It is advisable for taking the plants up each second or third year and divide the criminals to prevent overcrowding. The rock and roll garden species should virtually all be planted in well-drained and additionally rather sandy soil, as they are more likely to rot off during the winter months in rich or weighty ground.
The simplest approach to increase is by category at planting time, but there is little doubt that the best results are obtained simply by rooting cuttings of youthful growth in March, The spring, or May in very sandy soil in a very cold frame. Plants grown like this are more vigorous plus healthy than those brought up from divisions. Seeds of the species can be sown during March in light soil in a cold frame.
